Logo/Identity Design Process

jump to web design process

My aim is to combine my design knowledge with your insight into your market and to craft a design solution that will meet your project’s goals and leave a lasting impression on your audience. Below is a general outline of the approach I take to designing a logo:

Step 1: After initial contact, I will provide a questionnaire to gather more specific information about your goals and organization.

Step 2: After receiving the completed questionnaire, I will contact you to discuss your logo/identity project in detail so that I can craft a project specific contract and provide a quote.

Step 3: Quote submission and acceptance: Once a quote is accepted, the contract is to be signed and returned along with the CONTENT to be designed and the initial deposit.

Step 4: Using notes from our conversations and the information gathered in the questionnaire, I begin research to hone in on a style direction that will best serve your project’s goals.

Step 5: I take my findings and begin applying them to what I like to call the doodle phase. Here I let my hand loose on some of my initial ideas and consider different iterations of the design.

Step 6: When I discover “the one” I hone it down even more and consider how each stroke, curve and letter serves the project’s goals.

Step 7: Using a nearly complete concept I do a final hand drawn version of the logo, drawing guidelines, sketching and finally inking for maximum contrast when scanning for digital.

Step 8: I scan the document and begin perfecting the logo, making sure lines are even and curves follow the right flow, etc. all the while allowing each design decision to come through the filter of the project’s goals.

Step 9: Once I have a “perfected” final black and white version of the logo, I apply my research findings, your goals, and my design expertise to color selection.

Step 10: When the design is complete I deliver the final design, documentation showing my process and the design decisions I made along the way in order to provide the very best solution for your project’s goals, a CD with the digital file in a raw format that is widely used so that you can apply your logo to various mediums, and the final invoice.

Web Design Process

A website is a great investment and one that I handle with a great deal of care. Using your organization’s goals, the information you provide about your audience and my understanding of web technology and design, I craft a website that will be both aesthetically and functionally outstanding. Here are some of the steps I take to make this possible:

Step 1: After initial contact, I will provide a questionnaire to gather more specific information about your goals and organization.

Step 2: After receiving the completed questionnaire, I will contact you to discuss your web project in detail so that I can craft a project specific contract and provide a quote.

Step 5: I take my findings and begin brainstorming and sketching out ideas for different design elements that will eventually make up the website.

Step 6: After I’ve arrived at a design direction I begin the wireframe stage. Here I go into extensive detail regarding optimal positioning for different kinds of content and structure how each element will arrange based on what kind of device will be used to view the website. I make several notes here that will later be used to code and develop the website.

Step 7: Using the wireframes as a reference I assemble a digital construct in which I will design the site.

Step 8: Going from page to page I carefully and thoughtfully design each element, often going back to pen and paper to hand illustrate a rough idea or illustrating digitally, whatever the project’s goals call for, using the digital construct to keep everything to scale.

Step 9: After I have designed all the individual elements I arrange them to create the actual look of the website based on my wireframes. When this step is complete I can actually see what your website will look like as a screen shot. I create different arrangements that will be used for various devices and screen sizes.

Step 10: Each individual element is isolated and is either optimized and saved as an individual image or translated into style code that browsers can read and use to reproduce the element. Great care is taken with each element to ensure that your website will load quickly and work efficiently.

Step 11: When the design is complete I jump into development mode and install a wordpress content management system on your website’s server. The WordPress CMS is an amazing tool for easily maintaining your website once it is completed.

Step 12: Using the WordPress framework, I write each line of code to bring the design to life. I write clean, practical code that works well for indexing and search engines. I also make customizations to the CMS to suit your unique website’s needs. There’s not much detail to go into here, just days and days of typing and testing.

Step 13: After the code has all been written I test your website on multiple browsers and devices to ensure that it loads and functions properly.

Step 14: I personally provide a 2 hour training session and reference documents that will help you easily maintain your website.

Step 15: Finally I launch the website publicly and provide an invoice for final payment.
